A short history of Beaverton

The original occupants of the area were the Atfalati band of Kalapuya (Calapooya) Native Americans, who occupied a village on the Beaverton and Fanno creeks called Chakeipi. Although the name meant “Place of the Beaver”, early settlers called the village “Beaver Dam” which was later changed to Beaverton.

In the 1800s, settlers Laurence Hall and Thomas Denney started building the local economy with a grist mill and a sawmill, quickly creating numerous job opportunities. After the Civil War ended, more settlers started pouring into the small town. By 1893, with nearly 400 residents, it was officially incorporated as the city of Beaverton.

From being an agricultural-trade center, Beaverton developed into a residential community in the heart of Oregon’s “Silicon Forest” where electronics and research industries thrived. Today, the city is an important economic and tourist center, the home of technology company Tektronix, and headquarters of sportswear giant Nike.
